Dear Parents and Carers,
We would like to inform you about the National Phonics Screening Check, which all Year 1 pupils will take in week commencing 8th June 2026 (screening will take place throughout the week)
The phonics screening check is a short assessment designed to confirm whether children are on track with their phonics knowledge. It is not a complete test of their reading ability. It involves children reading a selection of real and “nonsense” (alien) words one-to-one with a familiar adult. The check is carried out in a relaxed and supportive environment and usually takes only a few minutes.
Please be reassured that we will ensure all children are fully prepared for the check. Phonics is taught daily in school, and the children are very familiar with this style of activity. We always approach the check in a calm and positive way so that children feel confident and enjoy taking part.
The result of your child’s Phonics Screening Check will be included with their Summer Term Snapshot Report. We cannot release it to you before then as the national pass rate can change from year to year. If your child fails the Phonic Screening Check then they will need to retake the check in Year 2. Provision will put in place to help them catch up.
How you can help at home
There are several simple ways you can support your child:
There is no need for any extra pressure or for formal practice at home — short, positive sessions make the biggest difference.
If you have any questions about the phonics screening check or would like advice on supporting your child at home, please do not hesitate to speak to a member of the Year 1 team or myself.
Thank you for your continued support.
Yours sincerely,
Miss K Graham
