Maths
In Reception, our maths learning is all about building strong foundations—especially in understanding numbers to 10. We place a strong focus on digging deeper into numbers to 10, ensuring children are secure and confident before moving on to larger numbers.
We believe that maths should be meaningful, practical, and fun. Our children explore mathematical concepts through hands-on activities, using real-life resources to solve problems, investigate patterns, and make connections. We encourage children to develop a deep understanding of number by manipulating objects, counting with purpose, and reasoning about what they see.
Children often learn to count by rote, but we help them understand why we count. For example, we focus on activities where children are asked to stop at a given number or match numerals to quantities, helping them see the practical use of numbers in everyday life.
Key Concepts We Cover:
Recognising numbers to 10
Counting with a purpose
Matching numerals to quantities
One more / one less
Number bonds to 5 and 10 (2+3=5, 6+4=10)
Subitising (up to 6)
Addition and subtraction within 10
Days of the week and months of the year
Recognising and naming 2D shapes
Our aim is for every child to become a confident, curious mathematician—ready to take their next steps in maths with enthusiasm and understanding.
